Standing outside of the building, I stared up at their floor.

After I left Clara’s dream, she woke up and went to her mom immediately. It was heartbreaking to see, but I knew they would be okay.

“You’re one of the more impressive of your kind, you know,” Zazel said after materializing by my side.

“Jeez!” I jumped back. “I hate it when you do that.”

“Should I have someone announce my arrival?”

“I suppose not.” We turned in unison and began walking back towards the bar. “At least you’re fully clothed this time.”

He chuckled. “You humans and your modesty.”

“I’m no longer human. Not fully, anyway.”

“Yet you are emotional like one, require food, sleep, and water like one—”

“Let me stop you right there.” I held up a hand between us. “You have no room to talk. You, too, have fallen victim to your emotions.”

“It’s true that Mara has changed me in so many ways.” He looked up at the night sky and sighed. “Emotions were not all unknown to me, but I had them in check before I met her. Now I cannot go a day without getting angry.”

“Love will do that to you,” I said, thinking of Lily.

“It’s not love that I feel for her. She is simply something I’ve wished to possess for a long time.”

Not having the good sense to be afraid of him, I laughed. Anyone could rip out my heart and send me back into the cycle, but Zazel could do that and more. He was the only being who could end me for good. But thankfully, as time stretched on, so did his tolerance for humans and supernaturals alike.

“There’s comfort in knowing that even an ancient being can be brought to his knees by the right woman.”

He stopped, and I followed suit as I bit back a grin. “I came back to praise your swift action regarding that dark soul. However, now you’ve pissed me off, so I won’t.”

“I’m touched, truly.” I put a hand to my heart and one of his dark eyebrows shot up. “You know I wish for nothing more than to stay in your good graces so you don’t snack on my soul.”

“Speaking of snacks… Lily is a treat.” He smiled and my face promptly fell. “Did you see how she looked at me?”

“Asshole,” I muttered. “Indeed, she was quite taken by your looks. But don’t kid yourself into believing that in the eyes of females we are not on par with one another. When we are in a room together, they don’t know which one of us they should look at.”

“I’ve noticed.” He chuckled as he stepped back. “Worry not. Your woman’s gaze is only wanting when it is on you.”

“She’s not my woman.”

“Then shall I make her mine?” He smiled as his physical form started to disappear from the feet up. “I am in need of a new plaything, since Mara still refuses to give in.”

“Do not.”

His form was carried away by the wind, along with the sound of his laughter.

He was kidding; that much I knew.
